What does SAE stand for in steel?

In the case of the simple alloy steels, the second digit generally indicates the approximate percentage of the predominant alloying element.

The US designations for steels are those of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) and the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).

SAE is a non-profit educational and scientific organization dedicated to advancing mobility technology to better serve humanity. Over 90,000 engineers and scientists, who are SAE members, develop technical information on all forms of self-propelled vehicles including automobiles, trucks and buses, off-highway equipment, aircraft, aerospace vehicles, marine, rail, and transit systems. SAE disseminates this information through its meetings, books, technical papers, magazines, standards, reports, professional development programs, and electronic databases.

SAE Vision:
International body of mobility engineers and practitioners serving society through interaction, creativity, timely response to change, social and economic responsibility and user satisfaction. Relevant, timely consensus standards available internationally. Life-long learning, education, networking and career development opportunities for mobility engineers and practitioners.

Scope Of Standards Developing Activity:
The Technical Committees of SAE—the heart of the organization’s consensus standards program—have been primary in moving forward many SAE partnerships, the work of SAE affiliate organizations, consortia driven standards capabilities and more. Comprised of the most impressive rosters of industry professionals and representatives from regulatory agencies and government groups worldwide, some 10,000 volunteers serve on more than 700 committees, subcommittees and working groups. SAE Technical Committees are also at the helm for developing new programs and capabilities for products and services beyond the traditional SAE standard such as supplier certification programs, cooperative research initiatives, maintenance training and more. The standards development programs of SAE are overseen by the organization’s Technical Standards Board (TSB), a who’s who list of industry executives. They oversee the various SAE Councils whose members direct the technical committee operations. The TSB ensures, too, that SAE meets the guidelines established by the World Trade Organization for the development of international standards.

Today’s SAE standards and related programs serve every aspect of industry—from design/integrate to build/manufacture to operate/maintain in both the commercial and military sectors—worldwide. SAE is committed to providing…and partnering to provide…the globally harmonized solutions needed for the future of the mobility industry.

SAE Standards Development:
Standards from SAE International are used to advance mobility engineering throughout the world. The SAE Technical Standards Development Program is now-and has been for nearly a century-among the organization’s primary provisions to those mobility industries it serves: aerospace, automotive, and commercial vehicle. Today’s SAE standards product line includes almost 10,000 documents created through consensus standards development by more than 240 SAE Technical Committees with 450+ subcommittees and task groups. These works are authorized, revised, and maintained by the volunteer efforts of more than 9,000 engineers, and other qualified professionals from around the world. Additionally, SAE has 60 US Technical Advisory Group (USTAG’s) to ISO Committees.
